Mosquito pupa. Light microscope footage of mosquito pupa (family Culicidae) at the surface of water. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in or near water. Each egg hatches into a larva which feeds on algae and other detritus suspended in the water, and after one to two weeks pupation occurs. The pupa has a fused head and thorax (cephalothorax) and segmented abdomen. It does not feed because its mouthparts are changing from the larval to the adult form. After a few days, depending on the water temperature, the pupa rise to the surface of the water, the cephalothorax splits and the adult emerges. | |
