Thin-layer chromatography. Animation showing the preparatory stages of the use of the analytical technique of thin-layer chromatography (TLC) to separate food dyes. The animation starts with a sample being taken from an ice cream containing several coloured food dyes. The structure of the TLC plate is shown next as a layer of hydrated silica (SiO2) on a glass plate. The molecular structure of the silica is shown, along with its hydroxyl groups (OH) that bond to the sample during the process. The next scene shows the solvent hexane being used with filter paper to create a jar saturated with hexane vapour. The TLC plate is then prepared with a pencil used to mark the starting point where the sample is placed using a capillary tube. For the actual TLC process, see clip K005/3729. For this animation with labels, see clip K005/3733. | |
