Launchpad failure during a test launch of the Mercury-Redstone 1 rocket. This was during the preparations for the Project Mercury manned spaceflight programme. In this test launch, the rocket malfunctioned after firing due to a wiring error. It rose ten centimetres in the air before the engines cut off, and it settled back in its launch position. Its escape rocket jettisoned, and the parachute recovery system was deployed. As it was still fully fuelled, the ground crew decided to let the batteries run down and the liquid oxygen oxidiser boil off, only approaching the grounded rocket the next day. This launch took place at Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA on 21st November 1960. Project Mercury succeeded in putting the first American in space with Alan Shephard piloting Mercury-Redstone 3 (Freedom 7) on 5th May 1961. | |
