Ring Nebula structure. Sequence showing the location and the structure of the Ring Nebula, also known as M57 and NGC 6720. This is a planetary nebula lying around 2000 light years from Earth in the constellation Lyra. Planetary nebulae are glowing shells of gas and plasma ejected by medium and low-mass stars at the end of their lives. Radiation from the white dwarf star, the white dot in the centre, causes a ring of nitrogen to glow red, hotter oxygen to glow green, and even hotter helium to glow blue. Irregular knots of dense gas are embedded along the inner rim of the ring, and their spike-like shadows glow red in hydrogen emission. Hydrogen emission also reveals the inner and outer halos which formed when the star began to burn out. A three-dimensional survey shows the complex structure of the nebula. The sequence was created using data from the Hubble Space Telescope, combined with infrared data from the Large Binocular Telescope, Arizona, USA. |
