Light microscope footage of a Euplotes daidaleos ciliate protozoan feeding. This single-celled organism is found in freshwater. It is covered in cilia (microscopic hairs) that are used for locomotion and to waft food towards its mouth. The food is filtered through membranelles (rows of fused cilia) in its primitive mouth, known as a buccal cavity. The small green bodies inside the protozoan are individual Zoochlorella sp. algae, which have a symbiotic relationship with the protozoan. They photosynthesise inside the protozoan, providing it with sugars and oxygen, while deriving protection from their host. | |
