Debris disc of AU Microscopii. Time-lapse sequence of ripples in the debris disc around the star AU Microscopii. AU Microscopii lies around 32 light years from Earth in the constellation Microscopium. It is known to be surrounded by a disk of dust and debris from collisions between asteroids, comets and other bodies. Such a disc is strong evidence that planets will form or have formed around the star. The disc's odd wave-like, rapidly moving features are not well understood. This sequence was created from data obtained in 2010, 2011 and 2014 from the Hubble Space Telescope and the SPHERE instrument on the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope. | |
