Gliese 436b in transit. Animation showing the transit of the exoplanet Gliese 436b in front of its host star, red dwarf Gliese 436. The planet itself is surrounded by a large halo and is followed by a long comet-like tail of dispersing hydrogen gas. The graph at the bottom shows the measured brightness of the star as the planet in its cloud of hydrogen moves between the Earth and Gliese 436. Gliese 436b is a Neptune-sized planet orbiting its star at some 4 million kilometres. Its surface temperature was found to be around 439 degrees Celsius, much hotter than would have been expected at its distance, implying a greenhouse effect at work. Gliese 436b was discovered in 2004. | |
