Duodenum in a patient with Barrett's oesophagus, endoscope footage. This region of the duodenum features the duodenal papilla, the opening of the pancreatic duct, which drains bile and pancreatic enzymes into the gut. In Barrett's oesophagus, reflux of stomach acid, bile, and small intestine and pancreatic contents cause damage to the cells of the lower esophagus. Cells lining the oesophagus change into cells similar to those which line the stomach, a type of change known as metaplasia. This condition often develops into an ulcer or even a malignant tumour (adenocarcinoma). Treatment is with drugs to reduce stomach acid production, although advanced cases may require surgery or cancer treatments. | |
