Barrett's oesophagus. Endoscope footage of the oesophagus of a patient with Barrett's oesophagus. This condition is a complication of chronic acid reflux from the stomach (not seen). Cells lining the oesophagus change into cells similar to those which line the stomach, a type of change known as metaplasia. This condition often develops into an ulcer or even a malignant tumour (adenocarcinoma). Treatment is with drugs to reduce stomach acid production, although advanced cases may require surgery or cancer treatments. The small whitish thickenings are areas of glycogenic acanthosis (benign epithelial hyperplasia). Mild glycogenic acanthosis is commonly found in healthy patients. | |
