Eagle Nebula. Animation of a view of a gas pillar in the Eagle nebula (M16). The Eagle nebula is a young open cluster of about 460 stars in the constellation of Serpens, 7000 light years away. The nebula contains several star-forming dust and gas regions. This animation shows part of a 9.5-light-year-tall pillar of cold gas and dust silhouetted against a bright emission nebula. The dense pockets of dust and gas in this pillar may be in the process of condensing into stars. The colours here come from ionised gases; the orange glow is from hydrogen. This view was obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope. | |
