Lacrymaria feeding. Light microscopy footage of a group of ciliate protozoa Lacrymaria olor (the 'swan') extending their long necks to hunt and catch their Cyclidium protozoan prey. Lacrymaria (here obscured) cannot see its prey, but toxicysts are fired when chemoreceptors detect that a target has been hit. Here, a trapped Cyclidium is reeled in to be consumed. Lacrymaria olor measures about 60 micrometres across when contracted, but can reach a length of 700 micrometres when extended. It is found in ponds, lakes and streams throughout much of the world. Filmed in a sample of pond water from Berlin, Germany. | |
