Lacrymaria protozoan. Light microscopy footage of the ciliate protozoan Lacrymaria olor (the 'swan') extending its long neck while hunting for its protozoan prey. Lacrymaria cannot see its prey, but toxicysts are fired when chemoreceptors detect that a target has been hit. Lacrymaria olor measures about 60 micrometres across when contracted, but can reach a length of 700 micrometres when extended. It is found in ponds, lakes and streams throughout much of the world. Filmed in a sample of pond water from Berlin, Germany. | |
