Lacrymaria feeding. Light microscopy footage of a Cyclidium protozoan that has been caught by the extended 'neck' of a predatory ciliate protozoan Lacrymaria olor (the 'swan'). Lacrymaria (here obscured) cannot see its prey, but toxicysts are fired when chemoreceptors detect that a target has been hit. The trapped prey is then reeled in to be consumed. Lacrymaria olor measures about 60 micrometres across when contracted, but can reach a length of 700 micrometres when extended. It is found in ponds, lakes and streams throughout much of the world. Filmed in a sample of pond water from Berlin, Germany. | |
