Heliozoan feeding on prey. Light microscopy footage of an Actinosphaerium eichhorni heliozoan feeding on captured rotifer prey. Heliozoa (sun-animalcules) are unicellular eukaryotic micro-organisms, classed as protists. They have long stiff actinopodia that they use to capture their prey. Here, two rotifer are caught on the actinopoda, and a third one has been ingested and is seen moving inside the heliozoan. During this clip, the captured rotifer at right is ingested. This specimen is in a pond water sample from Berlin, Germany. | |
