Ciliate escapes heliozoan. Light microscopy footage of the escape of a ciliate (lower centre) trapped by an Actinosphaerium eichhorni heliozoan (larger, upper right). Heliozoa (sun-animalcules) are unicellular eukaryotic micro-organisms, classed as protists. They have long stiff actinopodia that they use to capture their prey, which can include ciliates. Ciliates are microscopic aquatic protozoa that use cilia for locomotion. This ciliate releases chemicals called mucocysts to free itself. These specimens are in a pond water sample from Berlin, Germany. | |
