Pan over the surface of Mars to the so-called Face on Mars . This image was taken by the Viking 1 Orbiter on 25th July 1976. The Face is a large mesa-like formation, some 1.5 kilometres long, in the Cydonia region of Mars. The illumination angle cause shadows that give the impression of eyes, nose and a mouth. This is an example of pareidolia, the tendancy of the human brain to see faces in objects and scenes. | |
