Graph and data table for an experiment measuring the effect of surface area on the rate of reaction. The graph measures the decrease on mass of an experiment against time. The reaction was between hydrochloric acid and calcium carbonate, which produces calcium and chloride ions, water, and carbon dioxide gas, which bubbles off, reducing the mass of the system. The experiment was done twice, once with one large chunk of calcium carbonate, and once with the same mass but in several small chunks. The first line plotted shows the last chunk, which loses mass steadily. The second line shows the smaller chunks, which loses mass a lot more quickly. This is because the smaller chunks have a greater surface area for the acid to attack. The data table shows the figures recorded in the experiment. | |
