| Animation of the precipitation of yellow lead iodide when colourless solutions of lead nitrate and potassium iodide are mixed. Lead (II) nitrate (Pb(NO3)2) and potassium iodide (KI) are both soluble in water, and exist as a solution of their constituent ions. When they are mixed, a double displacement reaction takes place, forming lead iodide (PbI2) and potassium nitrate (KNO3). Lead iodide is insoluble in cold water, and forms a tight crystal lattice rather than staying in solution, as seen in the inset here. These crystals form a thick yellow precipitate which is denser than water, and sinks. | |
