Protein synthesis in cells. Animation of the synthesis of proteins in cells using the instructions in messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA). The mRNA strand is being read (translated) by a structure called a ribosome (blue). Matching fragments of RNA called transfer RNA (tRNA, yellow) bring amino acids (red) to the ribosome. The protein chain (polypeptide, red) grows in size as more amino acids are added to the protein as the ribosome moves along the mRNA strand. At the end of the clip, the full-size protein is released. The process is known as translation. For this process slowed down, see clip K004/6347. | |
