Adolescent elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris) cools itself in the surf along the Central Coast of California, USA. Judging by its lengthy proboscis, this one is not far from adulthood. Adult males can reach four meters in length and weigh over 2, 000 kilograms. Once hunted to near-extinction, northern elephant seals now number close to 200, 000.
