Mosquito pest control. Light microscopy footage of mosquito eggs being prepared for the injection of bacteria. This laboratory process is being used as a form of biological pest control, to eradicate diseases transmitted by the female mosquito. The techniques use the bacterium Wolbachia, which interferes with mosquito reproduction. Research has aimed to infect mosquito species such as Aedes aegypti and Anopheles stephensi, responsible for spreading diseases such as dengue and malaria. For the actual injections, see clip K004/5839. | |
