Toxoplasmosis infection. Light microscopy footage of the single-celled parasite Toxoplasma gondii infecting a larger bacterium. This enables the parasite to enter its host without detection. Toxoplasmosis is contracted via contact with infected cat faeces or raw meat. The parasite infects nervous and muscle tissue. In most people it remains inactive in cysts, but in immune suppressed individuals, such as AIDS patients, the parasite replicates, killing the surrounding cells. The most common symptom of cerebral toxoplasmosis is encephalitis (swelling of the brain). Treatment is with antibiotics. | |
