Bladderwort trap. Light microscopy footage of a bladderwort plant (Utricularia) trap. This carnivorous aquatic plant obtains energy by photosynthesis at the surface, catching aquatic zooplankton in its traps below the surface. The trapped animals are digested to provide phosphorus and nitrogen to the plant. This trap takes the form of an open tube with two large branched structures used to channel the prey into the opening, which then seals shut to close the trap. This specimen is from the Kaw Marsh, French Guiana. | |
