Demonstration of the differing densities of gases, showing dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) rapidly subliming after room temperature water was poured on it. The resulting cloud of carbon dioxide rises and forms a layer in the tank. The tank is half full of the very dense colourless gas sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). Carbon dioxide is less dense than this gas, but more dense than air. As such, it rises rapidly through the SF6, and forms a layer on its surface. Strictly the white fog is not carbon dioxide itself, but water in the air condensed by the cold. | |
