Aluminium is oxidised by iodine upon the addition of a few drops of water to form aluminium iodide. The water, containing the strong oxidiser oxygen, initiates the reaction. Once the reaction is initiated, it is energetically favourable for the aluminium and iodine to form the ionic compound aluminium iodide. The reaction is exothermic, with released heat causing the sublimation of iodine from solid to purple gas. | |
