| Ligand-gated ion channel. Animation showing the mechanism by which a signal molecule such as a neurotransmitter or hormone can trigger the opening of a ligand-gated ion channel. The ion channel (red) is embedded in the cell membrane (white). Ions (orange spheres) are not able to pass through the ion channel until signal molecules (green) bind to receptors (blue) on the surface. This results in the opening of the ion channel and the ions can flow from outside the cell to the inside of the cell. he binding of a neurotransmitter (or an hormone).
