Anchored to pond debris Stentor sp., a large ciliate protozoan, feeds as algal cells float nearby. Beating cilia that line Stentor's mouth are used to draw in bacteria and other food. Apparently disturbed, Stentor quickly contracts and disappears. Some Stentor species can grow to several millimetres in length, making them among the largest single-celled organisms. | |
