Types of antigen recognition. Animation showing two ways in which areas of an antigen are recognised by the immune system. This area of recognition on the antigen is known as an epitope or antigenic determinant. The first part of this animation shows a conformational epitope, with an polypeptide (lower left) being the antigen to be recognised by the antibody (tri-pronged). The polypeptide changes conformation (shape) to correctly fit the receptor site, with the binding elements shown in red. The second part of the animation shows a T-cell receptor (yellow) in a cell membrane (across bottom), with a potentially antigenic peptide across top. In this case, the recognition area consists of a continuous short sequences of amino acids (red dots). This linear epitope is shown fitting into the T-cell receptor.
