Chloroplast structure. Animation showing the layers and internal structure of a chloroplast, the organelle in plant cells responsible for photosynthesis. The outer layer is a highly permeable outer membrane. This is shown peeled back to reveal a less permeable inner membrane in which are embedded transport proteins. A thin space exists between these two membranes. The inner membrane is then peeled back to shown the internal space (stroma) that contains the thylakoid membrane. This membrane forms flattened and interconnected structures, with the disk-like ones forming stacks called grana. It is the thylakoid stacks that are the site of photosynthesis, the capturing of energy from sunlight using the green pigment chlorophyll. This energy can be stored in the form of starch for later use. For this animation without labels, see K004/4156. | |
