Melanin production, animation. A melanocyte (orange) is a specialised skin cell that produces the protective, skin-darkening pigment melanin. Melanocytes are found in the basal (bottom) layer of the skin. They have long dendrites (appendages) that extend into the upper layers of the skin (stratum spinosum, top). Melanin is transported in vesicles, known as melanosomes (dark granules), along the dendrites. Melanosomes are phagocytosed (ingested) by keratinocytes (skin cells) and the melanin is released to form a protective cap over the nucleus (blue). Master clip is 4x the speed of the original. | |
