Every time that DNA (deoyribonucleic acid) is replicated, mistakes (mutations) can occur in the sequence of nucleotides (A, T, G and C) that make up genes. Here the mutations are shown as coloured nucleotides. If the mutations are harmful they may be lost. Benign mutations and those that confer an advantage will be passed on to future generations and therefore play a central role in evolution.
