Allosteric enzyme inhibition. Animation showing the effect of an enzyme (green) on a substrate (blue) under normal conditions and following allosteric inhibition. Under normal conditions (first part of animation) the substrate is the correct shape to bind to the enzyme's active site (centre), and the enzyme promotes the cleavage (splitting) of the substrate into two products. When an allosteric inhibitor (brown) binds to the enzyme (lower left), it alters the shape of the active site to the extent that the substrate can no longer bind there, and the promotion of the normal reaction is halted. An enzyme is a biological catalyst, increasing reaction rates without itself reacting or changing. For similar animations showing different aspects of enzyme activity and properties, see K004/4116 and K004/4121. For this animation without labels, see K004/4119. | |
