Demonstration showing the miscibility of ethanol (alcohol) and hexane, an alkane hydrocarbon with six carbon atoms. Hexane is poured in from its bottle first, followed by ethanol. Hexane is a non-polar solvent, having a symmetrical linear molecule with no charge separation. Although ethanol has a polar alcohol group, its two-carbon chain allows it to interact with hexane, and the two liquids are soluble in each other, a property known as miscibility. | |
