Glycogen degradation, animation. The degradation of glycogen (glycogenolysis), the storage form of glucose, is triggered by the binding of a hormone (green) to a receptor (purple) in the target cell membrane. The bound hormone causes the receptor to bind the stimulatory G protein (red and yellow), leading to a change in the G protein from its GTP form to its GDP form. The alpha subunit of the G protein (along with the bound GTP) disassociates from the beta and gamma subunits and activates the enzyme adenylate cyclase (blue). The enzyme then catalyses the conversion of ATP to cyclic AMP and pyrophosphate. cAMP then converts phosphorylase from its inactive b form to its active a form. Phosphorylase a catalyses the addition of a phosphate group (P) to a branch of the glycogen model (bottom left), causing the removal of a glucose monomer from the molecule. | |
