Timelapse footage of a sundew plant (Drosera sp.) trapping a blowfly (Calliphora sp.). Sundew is a carnivorous plant, whose leaves are covered in sticky tentacles. Each tentacle is tipped with a sweet mucilage, which both attracts and sticks to insects. The plant responds to touch, moving more tentacles to touch any trapped insect, and eventually rolling the entire leaf round it. The plant then releases digestive enzymes that break down the insect, allowing its nutrients to be absorbed by the leaves. | |
