| Circular polarized light. Animation showing how filters can be applied to produce circular polarized light. At the start of the animation, the photons are shown with their electric field component (white arrows) oscillating at random perpendicular to the direction of propagation. The horizontal and vertical components are represented by a red and green arrow. During the animation, a linear polarizer lets one 'diagonal' component of the electric field of the photons pass. The second filter is applied when the photons pass through a certain medium ('quarter wave plate') with a well-defined length which causes a 90 degree phase shift between the horizontal and vertical component of the electric field caused by a different index of refraction for both (horizontal and vertical) field components. This phase shift causes the resulting electric field vector to rotate with a rotation axis parallel to the propagation of the light. This is known as circular polarized light. | |
