| Bacteriophage and lysogeny. Animation showing a temperate bacteriophage infecting bacterial cells in a process known as the lysogenic cycle (lysogeny). During this process, a bacteriophage (blue) attaches to a host bacterium and injects its DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid, red). This DNA is then integrated into the host DNA (circular plasmid loop). Bacteriophage DNA is then called prophage. The bacteria can reproduce a number of times with its prophage, but certain events (such as exposure to ultraviolet rays) can induce the prophage to detach from the bacterial DNA and enter a lytic cycle (see K004/2722) to produce new bacteriophages. | |
