Electrophoresis analytical technique. Animation showing the mechanism behind the analytical technique of electrophoresis. Molecules of sodium dodecylsulfate, an anionic detergent, are added to polypeptide chains and confer to them a high negative charge while maintaining them in a denatured state. The samples (coloured dots) are added by pipette to the electrophoresis gel. They are then submitted to a difference of electric voltage (plus and minus signs) and the polypeptides migrate towards the cathode (minus sign). The less heavy chains migrate farther than the heaviest one. This technique allows biochemists to determine the approximate molecular mass of different polypeptide chains.
