Pancreatic enzyme synthesis. Animation showing the synthesis and secretion of enzymes in the pancreas. This organ secretes digestive enzymes from exocrine cells into the duodenum, the start of the small intestine. The start of the animation also shows the location of the stomach. The animation zooms in on a cell in the pancreas to show the synthesis of the enzymes. This cell has an abundance of flattened saccules, part of the endoplasmic reticulum, especially around the nucleus and at the base of the cell. Ribosomes bound to the membranes show the intense protein synthesis taking place at this level (red), mainly zymogens, the precursors to the digestive enzymes. As the synthesis progresses, the products are passed upwards through the cell and through the Golgi apparatus (purple). The enzymes accumulate into vesicles (yellow) which bud from the trans cisternae. The vesicles arrive at the apical pole of the cell and fuse with the cell membrane and release their enzyme loads into the secretory ducts of the pancreas.
