Real-time fluorescence microscopy of the calcium flux in beating neonatal heart cells. The calcium flux, the flow of ions that controls the beating of cells, is very slow, and the levels of calcium in the cells remains high (bright). These cells have been hypoxic for five hours, kept low in oxygen. As such, they can be used as a research model for heart attack research, as their response is similar to that of mature heart cells affected by atherosclerosis (lack of oxygen due to artery narrowing). The cells have been tagged with the fluorescent indicator fluo-3. | |
