mRNA splicing, animation. mRNA (messenger ribonucleic acid) is the intermediary between DNA (DNA) and its protein product. Before the mRNA can be translated into amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, introns (non-coding regions, light blue) need to be removed. This process is known as splicing and leaves only exons (coding regions, dark blue). The splicing is carried out by proteins and enzymes collectively termed a spliceosome (not shown).
