Clathrin-mediated endocytosis, animation. This process, also known as receptor-mediated endocytosis, is a means of cells engulfing molecules through the inward budding of their plasma membrane. When a ligand (red) binds to its receptor (blue) it induces the formation of a clathrin coat (green) beneath it. The membrane begins to curve, creating a clathrin-coated pit. The curving continues until a vesicle is formed. The enzyme dynamin (orange) then releases the vesicle from the membrane, and the vesicle moves into the cell and sheds the clathrin coating. | |
