Cellular pathway for protein synthesis. Animation showing the stages and locations in the cell where protein synthesis takes place. The cell nucleus is at top right, and the cell's plasma membrane is at bottom left. In between are various internal membranes. The proteins are shown in red, and the locations glow white as the animation progresses, showing the order in which the protein synthesis and metabolism occurs. The first stage is protein synthesis from messenger RNA (ribonucleic acid) derived from the nucleus (top right). Next are the flattened folds of the endoplasmic reticulum (upper right). An important stage is the Golgi apparatus (lower left), where metabolic modifications occur in the presence of enzymes that transform the proteins to perform specific functions.
