Burkitt's lymphoma genetics. Animation of the changes to human chromosomes 8 (left) and 14 (right) that lead to Burkitt's lymphoma, a cancer of the immune system. Specifically, this is a cancer of the B-lymphocyte cells and results from the transformation of a proto-oncogene, a gene coding for proteins involved in cell growth and differentiation. The proto-oncogene is turned into an oncogene with an enhanced expression (effect). Here, the cause is a chromosomal translocation (red and blue arrows), with the myc gene on chromosome 8 (green dots) switched with an immunoglobulin (IgH) gene on chromosome 14 (red dots). The enhanced myc expression (lower right) causes Burkitt's lymphoma. For this animation with labels, see K004/2000. | |
