Secretion and action of perforin, animation. Perforin is a protein found in granules (centre right) secreted by cytotoxic T lymphocytes (purple), which are immune system cells. The granules are released when the T cell recognises an antigen on a target cell. Target cells include cells infected with viruses and cancer cells. When secreted, the perforin molecules (blue) insert themselves into the target cell's plasma membrane (grey bilayer) and form a pore. Water (red and white) moves into the cell, eventually causing it to lyse (burst). | |
