Blood pressure regulation, animation. Falls in fluid levels or sodium ion (Na+) concentration are detected by the juxtaglomerular apparatus (JGA) in the kidney. This triggers the release of the enzyme renin, which converts the inactive proenzyme angiotensinogen to angiotensin I. This is converted to angiotensin II by angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). Angiotensin II causes blood vessels to constrict (vasoconstriction), which increases blood pressure (arterial pressure, AP). It also stimulates the release of the hormone aldosterone from the adrenal gland, which causes the reabsorption of sodium in the kidney. This also increases the reabsorption of water and so raises blood pressure. | |
