Phagocytosis, animation. A bacterium (grey) being ingested, or phagocytosed, by a macrophage (green). Macrophages are white blood cells that detect, ingest and destroy pathogens in the body. In order for the bacterium to be detected by the macrophage, it must first be opsonised (chemically marked). This is done by antibodies (small yellow protrusions on the bacterium). Once the antibodies bind to the bacterium, they also bind to receptors on the macrophage, triggering phagocytosis. Once ingested, the bacterium will be broken down by digestive enzymes within the macrophage. | |
