Bacterial transduction, animation. This is the mechanism by which genetic information, in the form of DNA plasmids (circles of deoxyribonucleic acid), can be transferred between bacteria via a bacteriophage, or phage, a virus that infects bacteria. The phage (top left) injects its DNA into the bacterium and it integrates with the bacterial DNA. The phage harnesses the host cell's cellular machinery in order to replicate itself. All the new phages will contain a section of the bacterial DNA (red). When each of these virions matures and goes on to infect another bacterium, they will pass this DNA segment on. This process is commonly used by scientists to introduce foreign genes into a cell's genome. | |
