Retroactivity in metabolic pathway. Animation of a flowchart illustrating how the phenomenon of retroactivity affects the flow of metabolites in a metabolic pathway involving enzymes. The initial substrate (A) undergoes a series of intermediate reactions (producing B and C and D). The first pathway stops when enzyme 1 (between C and F) is inhibited by the final product (G). This product attaches to the allosteric site of the enzyme and induces a conformational change that results in a change of the active site. In turn, this change prevents the substrate of this enzyme from being metabolized further. A similar effect can activate a second pathway when product G binds to enzyme 2 (between D and E), promoting the production of final product E. For this animation without labels, see K004/0919. | |
