Melanin production, animation. A melanocyte (yellow) is a specialised skin cell that produces the protective, skin-darkening pigment melanin. Melanocytes are found in the basal (bottom) layer of the skin. They have long dendrites (appendages) that extend into the upper layers of the skin (stratum spinosum, top). Melanin is transported to adjacent keratinocytes (skin cells) in vesicles called melanosomes (dark granules). Melanosomes are phagocytosed (ingested) by keratinocytes, where the melanin will form a protective cap over the nuclei (blue) of the cells. Master clip is 4x the speed of the original. | |
